Discovery, traffic and conversion after the answer engine
Contents of the Dossier
- 0116-page evidence-backed briefing on the post-click era (instant PDF download)
- 02The two-sided picture in numbers: collapsing volume, rising value, and why reacting to only one produces the wrong moves
- 03Why brand recognition is now the switch: cited brands gain clicks while generic queries lose 34 to 46 percent of theirs
- 04A six-move playbook: what to measure instead of sessions, how to be the answer, and where the budget should go
- 05An Adria and Serbia section on using the adoption lag as a preparation window, plus a fully sourced insight extraction log
For twenty-five years the click was the web’s basic unit. Media power was counted in clicks, a brand earned attention by earning the click, and everything was optimised toward the blue link on the results page. That era is closing. Generative engines now stand between the question and the destination, resolving intent on the results page itself.
The numbers are no longer guesswork. Referrals from search to informational sites fell by roughly a third during 2025. The click-through rate on the first organic position slid from about 7.3% to 1.6%. Around 58% of searches now end without a single click.
Read quickly, that looks like a catastrophe. Read carefully, it is something more interesting: a redistribution, not a disappearance. The clicks that survive are more deliberate, more valuable, and increasingly concentrated on the brands the machine already trusts. This briefing holds both views at once, because a brand that reacts only to the volume story will make precisely the wrong moves.
What’s inside
- The measurable decline. What publishers are recording, what the circulating industry figures are worth, and why the replacement engine is not yet a traffic engine.
- The reversal in value. Adobe’s trillion-visit dataset: AI-referred visitors went from converting at half the rate of other traffic to converting 42% better in a single year, with lower bounce and longer sessions.
- The brand as the switch. Why cited brands are amplified while unknown ones are buried, and why answer engines close the shortcut performance marketing sold for a decade.
- The trust economy. What consumers now pay for transparency, what they cancel over, and how credibility becomes something a machine can parse and confirm.
- Where the money is going. The slowdown in paid search, the rise of retail media, and what the ad forecasts say about the environments where a machine does the choosing.
- The Adria window. Why a smaller market’s one-to-two-year lag is a preparation window rather than a reprieve, and why “wait and see” is the one strategy the mechanics rule out.
- The playbook. Six moves that follow directly from the evidence, from what to put on the dashboard to what to fund.
The click is not the point and never really was. It was a proxy for intent, and for a long time a good one. Answer engines broke the proxy while sharpening the thing it stood for. The winners of the next few years will be the brands that stop mourning the click and start earning the citation.
